Learn guitar
in a fun way

The client wanted me to create several main screens of a guitar learning app. But my approach is to look at the design not as screens, but as a flow because this is how user will experience it. So let me walk you through it.
Selected segment
At first I’ve selected segment of users I’ll focus on. I’ve selected Beginners as those who may use an app the most and who mostly may need paid features.
Who are beginners:
Just got a guitar
We have not yet studied either theory or practice
Age: 10-20 years old
This is Dasha, one of interviewees
Problem
People can't afford to learn with a tutor, and learning is exhausting. That's why there are guitar learning apps on the market.
I’ve conducted user interviews to understand what kind of problems they faced. There were 4 interviews with people who learnt guitar and at least one used any kind of app for it.
App purpose
Make learning fun, not painful.
To understand the app's value proposition, I mapped out a typical student journey. To find the pain that the app can cover.
What a guitarist does when they want to learn a song?
😃
Looks for a song, plays it
‘I learn what I like. It has to be a song that touches me.’
😔
Complex
Main demotivation
‘Sometimes the songs are so difficult that I get bored and just stop playing’
😃
Looking for simpler one
‘I'm looking for something simple to play with pleasure and not break my brain’
😵💫
Played 350 times
‘I followed the video tutorial and then played 350 times until I got it right.’
🙂
Learn the words
‘Yes, yes, that's the point. Like, just singing it.’
🥰
Playing to someone
Main motivation
‘Sometimes I post the videos I recorded on Instagram or play them for my son.’
Competitor analysis
There are already successful apps on the market on this topic, so I decided to find out what makes them popular and what can be improved. I analysed AppStore reviews using recensia.io and analysed the UI/UX of the apps.

Design and receive feedback at the same time:
In the process, I sent the design to the interviewer and immediately received feedback. This greatly simplified the work process and bring excitement.
Optimised the uploading of interview quotes:
Recorded the interview on a dictaphone.
Converted to text using Good tape.
I sent ChatGPT research questions and asked them to find answers to them in the text of the interview. I checked that the chat didn't make anything up and copied the quotes.
